Blog #1

Given my own future professional goals, I think the most important idea from this article is image recognition. As an aspiring photographer, I think image recognition is fascinating. For example, Apple's iPhoto organizes photos using faces, places, and events. Imagine your camera or computer doing all the sorting for you, image and face recognition is easier and faster and enables photographers to shoot more and worry less about sorting through thousands of images.

The most exciting web application that I have seen in the past year is Shopzilla. You can search for anything you need and the application will find it for you for the best price. Whenever I need to buy something, I always search for it on Shopzilla first to make sure I am getting it for the best price. The results come from all over, like websites like Amazon and Wal-Mart.

  1. I just bought a Mac last year and discovered the facial recognition in iPhoto! I thought it was the coolest thing ever too! I have thousands upon thousands of photos since I was in middle school and always hated searching for certain ones and going folder by folder. I definitely think that this facial recognition software could lead to bigger and better things with not just photo organizing but surveillance, 3D modeling, special effects with movies etc.

  2. Image recognition was what I found to be the most fascinating part of the article. Though it might be a little creepy at first, I think that it will become the way that people are "tagged" in pictures, among many other things. I have never heard of Shopzilla before, but I am glad you mentioned it! It seems like a really cool site, and definitely relates the economy of today!

  3. I own an Mac and until I read your post, I had no idea it had that type of capability. I do agree with #kcorr about it being creepy because it is honestly scary to think that technology has changed so quickly to the point where a computer can distinguish one face from another, characteristic of human brains! It's strange how human-like technology is becoming and is extremely important to have an eye out in the years to come.

  4. Face recognition is amazing. In terms of organizing data, it's only useful though IF you want to organize your photos based on people/faces and not on, say, events or another qualifier. Still, it's pretty impressive. At the end of the day it depends who is organizing what and to what ends.

Decent post. In the future, try to make a few more nods to the reading just so I can see that you really 'get' the main points. Thanks!

  5. First off, thanks for the tip on shopzilla. I never new about it before and think its a good idea that i would like to try out.
Second, I'm surprised at how advanced image recognition technology has become. My only experience with it is on facebook, and that still blew me away. I would like to see the potential that this technology has in the future.
